Overcoming writer's block for developers

Writer's block

It's often hard coming up with a fresh new article for your regular subscribers, especially after long weekend.

I'm still new to blogging, so I'm no expert at dealing with writer's block.

But over the past few weeks, I've come up with a few ideas which have given me some inspiration. I hope these work for you...

  • Look at old code/projects
It's always interesting to see how you coded 12 months ago. You might stumble across an interesting function or a difficult problem you had to solve. I'm not sure about other readers, but I always enjoy reading posts about these topics.

  • Talk to coworkers and other developers
It's fun having technical arguments. Good topics might be "[Popular programming language] Vs. Scalability" and "Desktop OS's Vs. Web OS's". Getting other peoples opinions on such topics can sometimes spark new ideas.

  • Learn a new language
Learning a new language can sometimes rekindle that spark you felt when you first started programming, which will lead to some creative thoughts. You don't have to master a new language, you could even just compare one to your favorite language.

  • Think into the future
Make a prediction every so often, you don't have to be right. I always enjoy reading about where people think Rails, Python or PHP will be in 12 months time.

You might also want to read where and when other people are at their creative best.
